Matters of the Heart

Matters of the Heart

Matters of the Heart

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in me.” John 14:1 NKJV

Last week my husband Michael and I spent a week with his family in Georgetown, South Carolina as we prepare for his mom’s homegoing service. We had plans to go down to visit with her in April and again in August, but the Lord had other plans.

The service was filled with great sangin, there were people who shared sweet memories, and I can’t forget about the uplifting preaching. Before I knew it, I was on my feet given the Lord praise and thanksgiving. Let everything that has breath, praise the Lord! It was a beautiful service filled with love.

In this passage of scripture, I have chosen to share with you, Jesus spoke directly to his disciples. In the intimate setting of a Passover meal, which is also known as the Last Supper. Jesus tells them that one would betray him and tells Peter that he will deny him.

After the Last Supper, before He is arrested, Jesus assures His disciples to not let their heart be troubled believe in God, believe also in me. Even in His absence they would not be alone, because the Holy Spirit was coming.

In the face of trouble my friends, as we look at all the chaos that surrounds us. We are hard pressed on every side, yet not crushed, we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed. We have a God who will come see about us his children. He reminds us, to not let our hearts be troubled. He does want us to worry, if we are believing in God, we must believe in Him too.  His love is the softest Kleenex for our eyes, and his arms are outstretched waiting to hold us tight. Amen.

Remember friends, we are each other’s keeper and the only time we should be looking down on someone is when we are helping them up.

Who is the Greatest

Who is the Greatest

Who is the Greatest

“Jesus and his disciples went to his home in Capernaum. After they were inside the house, Jesus asked them, “What were you arguing about along the way?” They had been arguing about which one of them was the greatest, and so they did not answer. After Jesus sat down and told the twelve disciples to gather around him, he said, “If you want the place of honor, you must become a slave and serve others!” Then Jesus asked a child to stand near him. He put his arm around the child and said, “When you welcome even a child because of me, you welcome me. And when you welcome me, you welcome the one who sent me.” Mark 9:33-37 Contemporary English Version

The passage single handedly shows that Jesus knew his people, as he asked His disciples what they were arguing about. Naturally no one wanted to say, we were arguing about which one of us is the greatest. But Jesus was not about to give them the qualifications or structure for such a task, instead he kept his response simple, telling them that if they want a place of honor serve others. Jesus told them when you welcome even a child because of me you welcome me and the one who sent me. As I reflect positively on my kiddy days, I think of how carefree and worry-free days they were. All I had was to focus on was the next game to play or show to watch on the television. It was a simpler time then. Children are both impressionable and honest at the same time, and if you told them Jesus was coming to town, they believed you. And when we got a little older, all we wanted was to grow up, as I think to myself, now what was the hurry all about.

Jesus explains to his disciples, that what mattered was not who was doing the works but in whose NAME is the work being done. There is power in the name of Jesus. Did you hear me friends? I said there is power in the name of Jesus. There is Saving, healing, transforming, and restoring power in his name. Yes, use your talents, position, and influence to serve others.  Jesus is the greatest, He is: The bread of life, the light of the world, the Good Shepherd, the resurrection and the life, he is the way, the truth, the life, he is my friend, who won’t leave me lonely, he is my hope for tomorrow. He is the true vine, and like a warm blanket, I wrap him all around me. He set a sista free, and he loves me just for me. Amen.

Remember friends, we are each others’s keeper and the only time we should be looking down on someone is when we are helping them up.

Mirror Mirror on the Wall

Mirror Mirror on the Wall

Mirror Mirror on the Wall

“Thou art fairer than the children of men; grace is poured into thy lips: therefore, God hath blessed the forever.” Psalm 45:2 KJV

I bet you can guess what movie my title for today is from. It’s the most recognize quote from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It is a 1937 American animated musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Productions. Did you know that it is based on the 1812 German Fairy tale, by the Brothers Grimm. It was the first animated feature film produced in the United States in 1938. The movie had a budget of 1.5 million dollars, however at the box office it made 418 million dollars.

The scripture begins with a poetic and powerful description of the King, praising and exalting Him both for who He is and what He does. The psalmist begins by simply noting the beauty of the King, saying He is more beautiful/ fairer than all others.

“Mirror mirror on the wall who is the fairest of them all. The lord Jesus He is the fairest of them all!  He is the Word made flesh, who He heals, reveals, compels, he sets free, leads, saves, forgives, provides, and loves. He makes a way out of no way. He wipes our tears away and replaces them with joy. He is our bridge over troubled waters. He walks and talks with us. He is our strong tower. He has us in the palm of his hands. No more loneliness, He is the HOPE that took us through yesterday. He is the head of our today. And He is right there  preparing us for our tomorrow.

Remember friends, we are each other’s keeper and the only time we should be looking down on someone is when we are helping them up.
